Winterthur's mission is to inspire, enlighten and delight all of its visitors while preserving and enhancing its buildings and landscape, its collections, and programs, and its history as a great American country estate.
Description:
Winterthur, an American country estate, is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969), an avid antiques collector and horticulturist. In the early 20th century, H. F. du Pont and his father, Henry Algernon du Pont, designed Winterthur in the spirit of 18th-and 19th-century European country houses. Winterthur currently offers tours of the 175 room mansion and 60 acre naturalistic garden.
History:
Winterthur was named for the Swiss town where family members of Jacques Antoine Bidermann lived. Bidermann married a daughter of E.I. du Pont de Nemours, founder of the DuPont Company. They built the first residence at Winterthur in 1839. Additions to the mansion were added in 1902 and 1929. The museum consists of Henry Francis du Pont's former home containing 175 period rooms, plus a wing added in 1992 with three exhibition galleries. The Louise du Pont Crowninshield Research building houses conservation facilities and a research library. The museum is surrounded by 979 acres, including a 66 acre naturalistic garden. Winterthur opened to the public on October 30, 1951.
