The YET After-school Literacy Program seeks to provide quality literacy instruction to all Philadelphia children and youth within walking distance of their homes. This is a critical service based on the high rate of students in Philadelphia schools who read below grade level (70%), and the ongoing inequity of funding and quality in urban schools.
Description:
YET has been successfully running after-school and summer programs that improve children's reading by 1 grade level for 3 years. The 30 centers operate in churches, schools and community centers in neighborhoods throughout North, West, South, and Northeast Philadelphia. During the school year, centers serving K-12 children behind grade level in reading operate Monday through Thursday, from 3:30pm to 5:00 pm. During the summers, 15 centers run programs in the late morning/early afternoon. Teachers and volunteers provide this critical service by working one-on-one and fostering caring relationships with students.
History:
The YET Literacy Initiative launched its first 7 programs in June of 2000 in order to address the major literacy problems confronting 70% of Philadelphia's school children. It collaborates with local, community-based organizations to provide teacher and volunteer training in order to ensure quality after-school literacy instruction. Currently, the centers show improvement in children's reading by 1.4 grade levels.
