Stand Up for what's Right and Just (SURJ) is dedicated to reforming Delaware's criminal justice system and attacking the causes of crime
Description:
Among the criminal justice reforms SURJ advocates are (1) Returning discretion to judges by reducing/eliminating mandatory minimum sentences, particularly for non-violent drug offenders (2) emphasizing treatment and rehabilitation rather than more costly and less effective imprisonment, (3) expanding prison-based care and treatment for drug/alcohol abuse and mental health problems, (4) ensuring a continuum of community-based care for drug and alcohol abuse and for the mentally ill, and (5) preventing the causes of crime by rejuvenating distressed neighborhoods and ensuring equal access to education, training and jobs.
History:
SURJ is a relatively new organization that has attracted over 3,000 members in its five years of operation. Among its founding Board members are former Governors Russell Peterson and Dale Wolf. Our members come from a variety of backgrounds, occupations, and political parties across the state (we also have many out-of-staters). We share a vision of a reformed criminal justice system in Delaware, and we promote an open dialogue toward that end.
