The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger fights hunger in Southeastern Pennsylvania through education, outreach, and advocacy.
Description:
Governed by a steering committee of anti-hunger experts, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger operates under the umbrella of the SHARE Food Program, Inc, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. With a small, dedicated staff, the organization actively engages volunteers from faith-based organizations, college campuses, emergency feeding programs, and social service agencies, as well as other anti-hunger advocates, to help fulfill its mission. Our education and advocacy programs aim to empower emergency food providers, to inform concerned citizens, and to help shape public policy. The Coalition serves as an information clearinghouse and a catalyst for collective action around the issue of hunger in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Striving to assist the 255,000 Southeastern Pennsylvania individuals who are forced to reduce meals to survive, the Coalition has developed an aggressive, multi-faceted outreach program, the Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign. Through this Campaign, we work directly with low-income people to help them access their food stamp benefits.
History:
Philadelphia-area anti-hunger organizations first came together in the late 1970s. For many years, a loosely knit coalition functioned intermittently, depending on issues and funding, but did produce such remarkable accomplishments as the creation of the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, Philabundance, and SHARE. In 1994, a Bread for the World Institute project focused on reinvigorating this effort. Later, in 1996, through a strategic planning process, it spawned the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. Today the Coalition links people and organizations concerned about the growing problem of hunger and food insecurity.
