City of Hope, an innovative biomedical research, treatment and educational institution, is dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases, guided by a compassionate patient-centered philosophy, and supported by a national foundation of humanitarian philanthropy.
Description:
"There is no profit in curing the body,if in the process, we destroy the soul."
At City of Hope, everything we do is guided by this philosophy, penned by Samuel H. Golter, City of Hope's executive director from 1926 to 1953. We are driven by the belief that healing does not come about by a new treatment or drug alone, but also by the care and compassion that a patient receives.
Our philosophy of Hope has inspired us to develop programs that focus on treating the whole person-their emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing-in addition to their physical care. It is this combination of patient-centered care, state-of-the-art treatment and groundbreaking research that has made City of Hope a world-renowned leader in the fight against cancer, diabetes HIV/AIDS and other devastating diseases.
History:
Compassion was the driving force that led to the founding of City of Hope in 1913. That spirit lives on at City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute, which today provides help to millions of people who are battling life-threatening diseases.
Located just northeast of Los Angeles in Duarte, California, City of Hope is a most unusual and remarkable place—where compassion and leading-edge care go hand-in-hand. Here, some of the world’s most knowledgeable physicians, researchers, scientists and health care professionals join forces to treat—and to one day cure—cancers and other life-threatening diseases. These distinguished experts provide state-of-the-art patient care and also conduct leading-edge research.
City of Hope is one of just a handful of Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). It is here at City of Hope that more than 300 physicians and scientists and over 2,500 employees work to find the causes of and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. City of Hope, located on over 112 beautifully landscaped acres, has 158 licensed beds, 84 of which are devoted to bone marrow transplantation patients.
More than 290,000 volunteers and donors worldwide support City of Hope and make it possible to continue the lifesaving work done here. Nearly 20 percent of our funding comes from private support through charitable contributions.
History: Over 90 Years of Healing and Hope
Initially conceived as a haven for those stricken with tuberculosis, in 2004 City of Hope celebrated the 90th anniversary of the pitching of the first two hospital tents... and now celebrates the opening of the new Helford Clinical Research Hospital at City of Hope. The past nine decades have seen the appearance of many historic milestones, leading to COH's reputation as an internationally recognized biomedical research institution focusing on cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. "From its very beginning, City of Hope has been blessed with visionaries from volunteer leadership to a forward-thinking medical, research and administrative staff," COH Board Member Jack R. Suzar says.
