The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson's mission is to increase the survival rate and quality of life for cancer patients by translating laboratory discoveries into new strategies to prevent, diagnose, monitor, and cure human cancer.

Description:
The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, one of only 61 National Cancer Institute designated Cancer Centers in the nation, is the cornerstone of the Jefferson Cancer Network. This 21-hospital network is one of the largest in the nation and treats over 12,000 new cancer cases per year. Our clinical partner, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, has consistently ranked in the U.S. News and World Report Top 50 Hospitals survey lists in a variety of specialties, including cancer in 2006. Our internationally renowned physicians and scientists herald from over 40 countries.

History:
The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson was founded in 1991, and named in honor of Mr. Sidney Kimmel, who has been recognized nationally for his contributions in support of cancer research.

Beginning in 1991 with approximately 30 investigators in the basic sciences, today the Kimmel Cancer Center has more than 150 members that include physicians and scientists dedicated to the discovery and development of novel approaches for cancer treatment.

A major focus of the Kimmel Cancer Center is to translate discoveries in the genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, structural biology, pharmacology and immunology of cancer into novel modalities for prevention and treatment.

Our clinical partner, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, has consistently ranked in the U.S. News and World Report Top 50 Hospitals survey lists in a variety of specialties, including cancer in 2006.
