Description:
Pennsylvania Hospital is dedicated to providing compassionate and personalized care to its patients. It takes special people to give freely of their valuable time and talents to help others. The people who volunteer for Pennsylvania Hospital are caring, dedicated and committed. Through their many meaningful activities our volunteers help further the objectives of the hospital and provide the best possible support and comfort for our patients, their families and visitors. In the past year, 500 volunteers served in over 60 different areas of the hospital. We have complimentary medicine programs such as Animal Assisted Therapy, Caring Clowns, and Cuddlers. Additionally, we have opportunities in our Emergency room and on our nursing units for pre-nursing,post-Bac, Pre-Med, PA and others interested in a career in healthcare. We run 3 training sessions per year, mid- September, mid-Janary, and a summer session June-end of August. Applications must be received 30 days prior to the training sessions. We also have a Summer Student Ambassador program for teenagers 14-17 years of age. No weekend or evening hours are available for the summer program. Applications will be accepted for the Summer 08 program from March 1, 2008 to May 16, 2008.
History:
Since its founding in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, Pennsylvania Hospital has been a leader in patient care, treatment techniques and medical research. Pennsylvania Hospital has provided the setting for many "firsts" in the nation including the first surgical amphitheater, the first apothecary and the first hospital auxiliary, as well as many other noteworthy medical, historical and cultural milestones.
