Uhuru Furniture is a project of the African People's Education & Defense Fund (APEDF). The APEDF strives to develop and institutionalize programs to defend the human and civil rights of the African community and to address the grave disparities in education, health, health care and economic development of the African community.
Description:
Uhuru Furniture is a fundraiser for the African People's Education and Defense Fund. Uhuru Furniture is a volunteer based store in Philadelphia, PA. We resell quality donations of furniture from the Philadelphia community. Volunteers participate in retail work, furniture pick-up, marketing projects, and building community events and forums. Internships are always available. Uhuru Furniture is an example of genuine community economic development for the African community.
History:
Uhuru Furniture is a national chain, raising resources for the APEDF in three cities currently. It began in Oakland, CA, in 1989, where it was originally just a flea market. Stores now exist in Philadelphia, PA, and St. Petersburg, FL, as well as Oakland, CA. In 1994, we set up shop on Spruce St. in Philadelphia, and have been developing our base of donors, shoppers and volunteers ever since.

Overall Experience
Refreshing & fulfilling to work for such a principled organization!

I've been volunteering for the African People's Education & Defense Fund (through Uhuru Furniture) for around two years now, doing whatever has needed to be done, from moving furniture to putting up posters, to advertising furniture online, and even recruiting others to volunteer their time to the cause.
I feel that I can make a real difference in the world working for the APEDF, because they are guided by a vision of the world which is long-range, and based on achieving a high standard of living for everyone on the planet - volunteering here is the antidote to boredom or depression which can result from not doing work to better the lives of others. This organization is fairly unique, in that it works for justice & economic development for the African working-class & poor community, and it is also led by that same community, so it's not just another charity, because the people themselves control the institution.
Also, it is a pleasure to work alongside other like-minded souls - people who are truly dedicated to justice in the world, as I am (and I'm sure you are too!). posted by joelrosenblum on February 15, 2005 |
