Our Values -- Our values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility are integrated into our operations and guide our behavior in the achievement of our mission.

Our Programs -- Our programs are delivered through 10 branches and 55 program sites throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.

  • The YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity is the largest provider of childcare in Pennsylvania, serving 5,000 children each day in quality childcare programs. 1,700 children are served each week of summer in our summer day camp programs.

*Over 28,000 children participate in YMCA swim instruction and water safety programs. Over 7,000 kids participate in Youth Sports/Movement programs that promote healthy lifestyles and teach character values.

*The YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity serves over 9,000 teens in programs such as YMCA Achievers, Teen NIghts, Leaders Clubs, and Teen Camps.

*1,300 adults participate in YMCA Adult Education programs which increase literacy and develop workforce skills through GED, ESL (English as a Second Language), tutoring, and computer training programs.

*The YMCA has established an international partnership with the YMCA in Yaroslavl, Russia and Sungnam, South Korea.

*Over 1,215 people volunteered in local YMCA's by serving on local boards of managers or working in youth or adult programs.

Our Membership -- The YMCA has more than 50,000 full privilege and program members and serves over 140,000 people each year through its many diverse programs. Approximately 50% of the membership is female.

Our Operation -- The YMCA has an annual operating budget of $34 million. THe largest sources of revenue are membership (37%), and childcare and day camp programs (27%) and over one-half of the childcare/day camp revenue comes from third party or contributed support. United Way contributions account for 2% of revenue. The YMCA has 300 full time employees and 1,200 part time employees.

History:
The YMCA started in the United States in 1851. The Philadelphia YMCA was founded in 1854 by George Stuart, a prominent Philadelphia businessman and importer. The Association began with 57 members. The first paid YMCA professional employee in the United States was John Wanamaker.
