History:
CSI is among the oldest African-American child welfare agencies in the country, celebrating more than a century of service.
CSI was founded in 1887 by Episcopalian nuns as the House of Saint Michael and All Angels to provide care for "young colored crippled children." Saint Michael later merged with the House of the Holy Child.
By 1946, it served more than 400 children in foster care.
Finally, in 1949, the consolidation of Saint Michael and the House of the Holy Child was renamed Children's Service, Incorporated.
