Description:
Downingtown Area Senior Center is an activity center for active older adults aged 60 and older. We provide services to nearly 2,000 individuals per year. Our services are designed to promote health and wellness through educational, nutritional and recreational programming. Our land exercise programs include chair exercises, cardiovascular and strength training as well as line dancing, tai-chi and yoga. We also have water programs that include water aerobics and water walking. There are a number of activities every day beyond our exercise programs that might include: art programs, board and card games, chorus, computer classes, current events discussion, book club, cook book club, knitting club, etc. Seniors can start their day with our continental breakfast and while they are here they can enjoy our noon meal. In addition to our wellness programming we also offer information and referral assistance. Our information and referral service can provide assistance with state entitlement applications, health insurance counseling, property tax and rent rebates and referrals to other social service agencies.

History:
Downingtown Area Senior Center has been operating since 1974 having started as a Meals Together program in a local church. The Center rented space from this church until April 30, 2002. In August 2002 the Senior Center purchased their current 5,000 square foot facility in the Ashbridge Commons Center in East Caln Township, Chester County.

In March 2008 the Board of Directors and Staff of the Senior Center announced plans for yet another relocation. The Senior Center has formed a strategic partnership with the Downingtown Public Library to renovate a building in Downingtown that will provide a home for both agencies. The Senior Center will expand in size from our current 5,000 square feet to nearly 12,000 square feet in the new facility.
