The main goal of Senior Adults for Greater Education is to recognize the wisdom of older adults and to promote intergenerational interactions through a variety of programs. It is realized that not only can children learn from the vast experiences of these adults, but also the adults can derive much pleasure from interacting with the students.
Description:
Senior Adults for Greater Education is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide intergenerational volunteer opportunities within the local schools. We currently have over 900 members, with approximately 15% of them volunteering in some capacity - some weekly, some sporadically. Weekly volunteers assist students with reading, editing written work and practicing math facts. They help in school libraries, assist students for whom English is a second language, help with state testing preparation, and more. Episodic volunteers have spoken on various topics, judged science fairs, participated in career fairs and been interviewed by students about what it was like to be young years ago. S.A.G.E. also offers computer literacy classes for seniors, taught by school district staff, and mentored by students in districts desiring this. We offer various intergenerational opportunities, such as dinners, spelling bees, bingo games and choirs, for seniors to interact with students. Come and join us!
History:
Senior Adults for Greater Education has been in existence for over 8 years and has grown steadily. We currently serve the Council Rock, Bensalem and Neshaminy school districts, and in January 2008, we will begin the program in the Bristol Township School District. We work within the schools and have the support of the administration, the school board and the teachers union as well.
