The Georgia E. Gregory Interdenominational School Of Music (GEGISOM) is a non-profit , charitable performing arts institution, providing music instruction on piano, keyboard, organ, guitar, percussion, voice, hand bells, woodwinds, strings, dance and drama to students ages 5 and up. GEGISOM offers study in all genres of music and a venue for the training of future musicians for religious institutions. GEGISOM offers programming in the musical arts and academic enrichment to at risk youth an underserved community of North Philadelphia and recently implemented a tutorial program in Reading and Math. Volunteers are needed for tutoring the youth in our after scchool program from 4-5pm daily.
GEGISOM now offers an (8) station keyboard lab with access to Finale and Cakewalk for technology in music.
Description:
In addition to our three-twelve week classes of individual or group music instruction and the summer music performing arts camp, we are happy to offer an after school program.
GEGISOM is located at 1628-30 W. Allegheny Avenue where we have a two story building consisting of 4-5 classrooms.
We offer private or group music instruction and keyboard laboratory with computer, academic enrichment, drama, dance, after school and summer programming.
We need volunteers with organizational skills to help us organize a Parent Association. We need volunteers with office skills for office management. During our summer and after school program volunteers can assist in our classroom instruction and meal dispensing as well as academic tutors. We would like to expand our program to offer more services to the youth in the community, a volunteer can help with canvassing the area and passing out our brochures in the community.
Interested volunteers must have the following clearances. 1) criminal background 2) child abuse 3) FBI. Thet are needed to volunteer at our school.
History:
GEGISOM opened it's doors in July of 1999, we are now in our ninth year of operation and presently have 60-65 students. The school was named after Georgia E. Gregory who served in her church as a musician to the youth for 42 years and now her daughter, Joyce Drayton now retired, continues to serve as a church musician for 51, years founded the school to help others be trained on the instrument of their choice. Our goal is to prepare musicians to serve in our religious congregations who lack musicians. We also provide youth at risk a venue for cognitive and musical training in all music styles, as well as, a tutorial program in reading and math and homework assistance.
