Neuman Senior Center relocated its programs and services to the Klein Branch in February of 2004. In partnership with the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), many more older adults are being served by having access to diverse programs and services, including meals, social services, health screening, educational and cultural and intergenerational opportunities. The Klein Branch still remains a full service branch, serving all ages from pre-school to teens, singles to young families and empty nesters to seniors.
927 individuals participated in traditional Passover rituals and enjoyed a kosher meal at seders sponsored by JCCs Senior Center Klein Branch and satellite sites.
In the year 2004, community volunteers working with the Senior Center at the Klein Branch Cook for a Friend and Kosher Meals on Wheels programs delivered 34,138 kosher frozen meals to 551 homebound elders who were unable to prepare their own food.
Participants of the JCC Senior Center at the Klein Branch will be expected to enjoy, September 2004 through August 2005, 40693 kosher lunches and good company, while an additional 4523 meals will be enjoyed by Russian speaking elders at the Klein Branch.
The Center nurse provided more than 1200 consultations to the Klein Branch seniors in 2004, regarding issues ranging from hypertension to medication management. Often functioning as liaison between older adults and their physicians, more than 90% of the visits pertained to assistance with the management of chronic diseases.
History:
In 1971, the JYC Board of Directors appointed & charged the Northeast Planning & Development Steering Committee to: A) Determine the scope of the program required for the Northeast; B) Determine size & scope of facilities required & C) Determine locations of facilities.
Subsequently a Program Committee was developed which sought to survey the social. recreational & informal educational needs of the more than 100,000 Jewish residents fo the Greater Northeast. The committee accumulated data through 9 program subcommittees focusing on: Pres-school Chilodren; Elementary School Age Children; Junior High Age Students, Senior High Age Students; College Age Yung Adults; Adult Education/Cultural Arts; Community Services; Senior Adults & Physical Education.
The results of the Program Committee study were published June, 1972.
As the Program Committee was preparing its study, a Site Selection Committee was in the process of choosing a site in Northeast Philadelphia on which to erect a building that would house the services required. The facility was to be on a "campus" type setting in the far Northeast. In 1972, a 20 acre site was obtained on Red Lion Road & ground was broken in November, 1973. The building opened in September of 1975.
