To work to end hunger in the Delaware Valley by rescuing surplus food and distributing it to organizations serving people in need.
Description:
Volunteers work in our 53,000 sq. ft. warehouse, sorting non-perishable food, packing food boxes for seniors, warehouse clean-up, stocking shelves. Group volunteer hours are 8:30 AM - noon and 12:30 - 3:30 PM Wed. thru Sat. and every third Tues. night from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Individuals can volunteer Mondays through Saturdays. Volunteers must schedule in advance with the volunteer coordinator. We take individuals or groups up to 40 persons, no one under the age of 9 years. Work is done in a warehouse setting and therefore sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes MUST be worn - no open toes. Corporate teams are welcome!
History:
Philabundance is a nonprofit organization fighting hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley. It was founded in 1984 as a food rescue organization to help ensure that perishable food that otherwise would have gone to waste was instead provided to people in need. Today's Philabundance is a result of the 2005 integration with the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank. The Food Bank was founded in 1980 to be a bridge between those with extra non-perishable food and those without enough. Today, Philabundance provides a full plate of services to approximately 800 member agencies and the people they serve.
