The Center Foundation empowers people to be all they want to be and builds caring communities through mentoring, education, and support. We match caring adult volunteers with teen mothers and other women needing support and mentoring.
Description:
The Center Foundation operates two mentoring programs: WomenCare, for adult women in transition, and the Young Parents Support Network (YPSN), for teen parents.
History:
The mission of The Center Foundation is to empower people to be all they want to be, and build caring communities through mentoring, education, and support. Our history begins in 1994, when The Center Foundation (TCF) emerged as a private operating foundation with the purpose of promoting positive social change through public education and encouragement of cooperative social action. TCF executed these ideals through projects designed to empower individuals to fulfill their potential as productive, caring, and supportive members of our community. In 1996, following the report from a survey of local women describing the presence of mentors as a significant factor to achieving economic self-sufficiency and well-being, TCF partnered with Friends of the Delaware County Women's Commission and Women's Association for Women's Alternatives (now known as PathwaysPA) to launch the Community Mentoring Program for Women. The pilot program linked six pairs of local women into structured and supportive mentoring relationships. The Center Foundation assumed supervision and expanded the scope of the mentoring project in 1997, including linkages with other social service agencies and opening opportunities for mentoring to the broader community. This outgrowth became WomenCare, TCF's first mentoring program, focusing on women in transition throughout Delaware County. WomenCare graduated its first "class" of mentors and partners in spring of 1998, officially marking The Center Foundation as a provider of mentoring services. In 2001, a focus group noted an acute lack of mentoring programs for pregnant and parenting teens. Having experienced continued success with WomenCare, TCF rose to the challenge, and launched YPSN, or Young Parents Support Network, at Chester High School in 2002. Working in conjunction with programs for teen parents of the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, YPSN now provides three school districts with volunteer mentors, supplemental workshops and activities, and academic resources for teen parents in the program. Today, over 400 people have benefited from The Center Foundation's mentoring programs. As we begin our second decade of commitment to social change, we hope to continue our growth by reaching greater numbers of people in more diverse segments of the community.
