 The American Cancer Society’s “Buddy Program.” To provide one-to-one support, encouragement, hope and information to cancer patients and their families undergoing a similar cancer experience. Qualifications · Is a cancer survivor who is at least 12 months post treatment OR Family member of a former cancer patient. · Is emotionally well-adjusted and physically well. · Exhibits relevant personal characteristics, e.g., empathic, articulate, well-groomed, reliable, attentive listener, has a positive attitude and sense of humor, willing to share personal cancer experiences, and ability to relate to others with sensitivity and warmth. · Has a reference from a health care professional or other source. · Has successfully completed CanSurmount volunteer training. Responsibilities · Knows and abides by the guidelines and policies of the American Cancer Society and the CanSurmount program. · Is available for assignments; notifies coordinator when not available or otherwise unable to accept a referral. · Responds to patients, volunteers and American Cancer Society staff in a timely manner. · Speaks with cancer patients and/or family members requesting CanSurmount services in person when geographically possible or on the telephone. · Provides a model of hope for patients and family members by drawing upon own experiences. · Completes and returns required visit reports in a timely manner. · Provides feedback to American Cancer Society staff. · Creates and fosters community awareness of the CanSurmount program and other ACS Patient Services. · Attends continuing education programs as needed to maintain active volunteer status. · Maintains good relationships with health care providers and observes all rules of the institution if visiting in a medical setting. · Maintains strict confidentiality of all patient information.
