Make a child's visit to prison brighter! UWSEPA
Last updated on June 12, 2008

"I like the game room because me and my father play games and he lets me win." - 6 year old boy

"The playroom should be open every day so that all the kids can have fun." - 8 year old girl

"I hate visiting my brother in prison because it is so depressing. Despite the situation, the Family Resource Center helps us have a good visit because we play board games and talk." - Adult sibling of an incarcerated man

The Family Resource Center-Outside Unit is a child-friendly and inviting play area in the visiting room at Graterford prison. Through structured and informal activities, reading and crafts, children and their incarcerated loved ones enjoy their visits and develop strong family relationships.

The Outside Unit Volunteer works 1-2 weekend shifts - Saturday or Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The prison is located approximately 40 miles north of Philadelphia.

Volunteer responsibilities include engaging with children in a way that builds their self-esteem and models safe and healthy relationships; interacting with children's families and incarcerated men; facilitating age-appropriate activities and programs, such as arts and craft, games and reading; and assisting with special events. Following orientation and training, volunteers will typically work a shift alone.

Requirements for this position include the enjoyment of children and interest in their age-related needs and interests; ability to relate to different types of people; friendly and enthusiastic demeanor; strong communication and conflict resolution skills; flexibility, patience and ability to think on one's feet. Spanish speaking is a plus. Prison and Child Abuse History clearances and negative TB test results are required.
