Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest helps people build independence through training, education, and employment.
Description:
Each year Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest helps more than 3,100 people in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Those we serve have disabilities or disadvantages, ranging from physical challenges to mental impairments. Many are motivated but lack competitive skills and work experience, and some are transitioning from public assistance to independence. Others who may not be able to work full-time want to participate in their community's activities and opportunities. Support services from Goodwill make this possible for them and their families. Goodwill's staff works closely with each individual--and specialists from referring agencies--to identify goals, interests, needs, and possibilities. Often sophisticated diagnostic testing is used, and short-term classroom training and temporary work experiences at community work sites help people enter or reenter the workforce. For the many people we serve, our goal remains the same: to help each individual realize their dreams.
History:
"Not a Coin in His Hat, But a Tool in His Hand" 1938 - On the steps of the Rockford Methodist Church, Dr. Ernest F. Harold suggested that Reverend Charles M. Estabrook start plans for establishing a Goodwill in Spokane, Washington. 1939 - In October, Reverend Estabrook selected the Norwegian Church building on Third and Cowley, which was rented for the first Spokane Goodwill store. Doors opened December 5, 1939-with $43 in debt, two helpers and the Superintendent. Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest now has 11 stores throughout eastern Washington and northern Idaho. From its Spokane, Washington, headquarters, they operate in the seven easternmost counties of Washington (Adams, Asotin, Grant, Lincoln, Spokane, Stevens, and Whitman) and the nine counties in North/North Central Idaho (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce and Shoshone), providing services to over 1500 people each year.
